Only as you become RAM constrained does the OS really start getting ruthless in what app gets what RAM allocation and then you can see the minimum level of RAM allocation the apps can function with.Ĭhip doesn't really make much difference between M1, M2, or M3 as the RAM allocation is done by whatever MacOS you've got running and the needs of your applications (or whatever you are doing right now in those applications). But that doesn't really mean that the RAM is needed or making a performance difference. So, for example, RAM allocated to OS and apps will be much higher if you have a 32gb RAM than if you have 8gb RAM. The OS will allocate any free RAM if it can think of any plausible piece of data to put in the RAM. Unless you see memory pressure going yellow, you don't really know where the line is between having RAM allocated versus needing it.
